Class 11 Biology Chapter 3 Revision Summary Strictly NCERT

1. Chapter at a glance

  • Kingdom Plantae now excludes fungi, Monera and Protista; cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) are no longer placed under algae.

  • Algae: “chlorophyll-bearing, simple, thalloid, autotrophic and largely aquatic (both fresh water and marine) organisms.”
  • Bryophytes: “amphibians of the plant kingdom because these plants can live in soil but are dependent on water for sexual reproduction.”
  • Pteridophytes: “Evolutionarily, they are the first terrestrial plants to possess vascular tissues – xylem and phloem.”
  • Gymnosperms: “plants in which the ovules are not enclosed by any ovary wall and remain exposed, both before and after fertilisation. The seeds that develop post-fertilisation, are not covered, i.e., are naked.”
  • Heterosporous: genera that produce two kinds of spores (macrospores and microspores).
  • Homosporous: plants in which all spores are of similar kinds.
  • Numerical Taxonomy: “based on all observable characteristics. Number and codes are assigned to all the characters and the data are then processed.”
  • Cytotaxonomy: “based on cytological information like chromosome number, structure, behaviour.”
  • Chemotaxonomy: “uses the chemical constituents of the plant to resolve confusions.”

4. Common misconceptions and exam pitfalls

  • Cyanobacteria are still called “blue-green algae” – NCERT explicitly states they are excluded from Plantae.
  • Assuming vegetative characters are reliable for classification – text stresses they are easily affected by environment, hence artificial systems are flawed.
  • Confusing isogamy, anisogamy and oogamy – examples (Ulothrix, Spirogyra, Volvox/Fucus) must match exactly.
  • Thinking bryophyte sporophyte is independent – it remains attached to and nourished by gametophyte.
  • Mixing homospory with heterospory in pteridophytes – Selaginella and Salvinia are heterosporous; most others are homosporous.
  • Forgetting that gymnosperm gametophytes have no free-living existence.
  • Overlooking that pteridophyte gametophytes (prothallus) need cool, damp, shady places.
