1. Chapter at a glance
- All living organisms are made up of cells; the cell is the basic structural and functional unit of life.
- Cells are of two main types: prokaryotic (no well-defined nucleus or membrane-bound organelles; nucleoid present) and eukaryotic (well-defined nucleus and membrane-bound organelles).
- Every cell has a selectively permeable cell membrane; plant, fungal and bacterial cells have an additional rigid, permeable cell wall made mainly of cellulose.
- The cytoplasm contains organelles (nucleus, mitochondria, plastids, ER, Golgi apparatus, ribosomes, lysosomes, vacuoles) that perform specific functions in a coordinated manner.
- The nucleus contains chromosomes (made of DNA and proteins) that carry genetic information; genes are functional segments of DNA.
- Osmosis is the movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane from a region of higher water concentration to lower water concentration; it explains the behaviour of cells in isotonic, hypotonic and hypertonic solutions.
- Cell division occurs by mitosis (two identical daughter cells) for growth and repair, and by meiosis (four daughter cells with half the chromosome number) for gamete formation.
- Cell theory states that all living organisms are made of one or more cells, the cell is the basic unit of structure and function, and all cells arise from pre-existing cells.
2. Definitions and laws
- Limit of resolution of the human eye: Two points separated by about 0.1 mm can be seen as distinct when viewed from about 25 cm.
- Cell membrane (plasma membrane): A thin boundary that surrounds a cell, protects its contents and is selectively permeable (allows some substances to pass while blocking others). Thickness: 7–10 nm.
- Osmosis: The movement of water through a selectively permeable membrane from a region of higher water concentration (dilute solution) to a region of lower water concentration (concentrated solution) until concentrations become equal.
- Diffusion: Net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration (occurs even without a membrane).
- Cell wall: Additional rigid, permeable covering outside the cell membrane in plant, fungal and bacterial cells; made primarily of cellulose in plants.
- Prokaryotic cell: Cell that lacks a well-defined nucleus and membrane-bound organelles; genetic material lies in a nucleoid.
- Eukaryotic cell: Cell that has a well-defined nucleus and several membrane-bound organelles.
- Cell theory (classical):
– All living organisms are made up of one or more cells.

– All cells arise from pre-existing cells.
- Mitosis: Cell division that produces two genetically identical daughter cells from one parent cell.
- Meiosis: Cell division that occurs in reproductive cells and produces four daughter cells, each with half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell.

4. Common misconceptions and exam pitfalls
- Confusing osmosis (water only, across membrane) with diffusion (any particles, no membrane required).
- Assuming all plant cells have chloroplasts (only green parts do; roots have leucoplasts).
- Thinking animal cells never have vacuoles (they have small temporary ones) or that plant cells never lack a nucleus.
- Writing “cell wall is selectively permeable” (it is fully permeable; cell membrane is selectively permeable).
- Mixing up mitosis (body cells, identical daughters) with meiosis (gametes, half chromosome number).
- Forgetting that prokaryotes lack membrane-bound organelles and a true nucleus.
- Stating cell theory points incorrectly or omitting “all cells arise from pre-existing cells”.
