Definitions and laws

Biodiversity hotspots: “Regions that support a large number of endemic species and have undergone significant habitat loss are known as biodiversity hotspots.”
Biological classification: “This scientific system of grouping living organisms is known as biological classification.”
Five-kingdom classification (Whittaker, 1969): Monera (unicellular prokaryotes), Protista (unicellular eukaryotes), Fungi (multicellular heterotrophic eukaryotes with chitinous cell wall), Plantae (multicellular autotrophic eukaryotes with cellulose cell wall), Animalia (multicellular heterotrophic eukaryotes).
Binomial nomenclature (Linnaeus): Every organism has a scientific name with two parts—genus (capitalised) followed by species (lower case), written in italics when printed or underlined when handwritten.

Common misconceptions and exam pitfalls

  • Assuming all unicellular organisms belong to one kingdom (Monera vs Protista distinction based on nucleus and cell wall is frequently confused).
  • Placing fungi with plants (fungi are heterotrophic decomposers with chitin wall, not autotrophic).
  • Thinking bryophytes and pteridophytes produce seeds or flowers (they do not; seeds appear only in gymnosperms/angiosperms).
  • Confusing notochord with vertebral column (protochordates have notochord at least once in life; vertebrates have vertebral column).
  • Writing scientific names incorrectly (genus not capitalised, species not lower case, or not italicised/underlined).
  • Believing classification is fixed (text emphasises it changes with new evidence such as DNA studies).
