2. Key terms and concepts

  • Urban / Cities: Areas with high population concentration, diverse businesses, government institutions and elaborate transport/communication systems; governed by elected urban local bodies.
  • Rural areas / Villages: Lower population, agriculture-based occupations, close-knit communities, governed by gram panchayats.
  • Population density: Number of people living per square kilometre (total population ÷ area in sq km).
  • Demographer: Person who studies population characteristics such as size, distribution and structure.
  • Urbanisation: Population shift from rural to urban areas with a corresponding decrease in the rural proportion.
  • Business Process Outsourcing (BPO): Hiring another company to perform specific business functions, reducing costs.
  • Air Quality Index (AQI): Numerical scale combining data on pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, etc.) to show air pollution level and health risk.
  • Urban planner: Person who designs land use in cities to optimise infrastructure and quality of life.
  • Master Plan: Long-term document providing a conceptual layout to guide future growth (updated periodically).
  • Vertical gardens: Growing plants on walls or vertical surfaces instead of ground to maximise limited space.
  • Blue zones: Cities/regions where people live significantly longer, healthier lives due to lifestyle and environment.
  • Slums: Overcrowded settlements with poor housing and limited municipal services, usually on city peripheries.

4. Cause and effect

  • Proximity to iron ore + Tata vision → Sakchi developed into planned industrial township (Jamshedpur, 1919) attracting migrants and factories.
  • Coastal location + port facilities → Mumbai emerged as financial capital (BSE 1875) and film industry hub.
  • Concentration of software firms, start-ups and educational institutions → Bengaluru became IT hub (“Silicon Valley of India”) offering skilled jobs.
  • Rapid in-migration without adequate housing → growth of slums, pressure on water, sanitation and roads.
  • Unplanned expansion + encroachment of lakes → water scarcity in summer and flooding in monsoon (Bengaluru case).
  • Grid planning, wide streets and pink sandstone use → Jaipur (“Pink City”) achieved aesthetic appeal, security and water supply.
  • Long-term Concept Plan + Master Plan + vertical gardens + integrated transport → Singapore maintained high quality of life despite very high density.

6. Common misconceptions and exam pitfalls

  • Assuming every place with 5,000 people is automatically “urban” in India (the threshold is one of several criteria used by Census).
  • Confusing cause of city growth: not only industry; also administration (Delhi), pilgrimage/tourism (Varanasi, Agra) and historical trade.
  • Thinking urban planning is only about buildings; NCERT emphasises mixed-use spaces, walkability, green cover and citizen participation.
  • Overlooking two-way dependence: cities rely on rural areas for food and labour while rural areas benefit from urban markets and services.
  • Writing generic answers on “pollution” without linking to AQI data or specific examples like NCR or Bengaluru lakes given in the chapter.
