4. Cause and effect
- Medical advances (antibiotics, vaccines, sanitation) after 1950s → sharp fall in death rates → rapid population growth (Stage 2 of demographic transition).
- Rise in female education, urbanisation and formal employment → later marriage, smaller families → falling fertility and birth rates (Stage 3).
- China’s One-Child Policy (1979) → rapid fertility decline but led to ageing population, labour shortage and skewed kinship networks.
- Migration to cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru) → urban population growth but pressure on housing, water and transport.
- Declining fertility below 2.1 → future population stabilisation or decline; wider top of population pyramid (more elderly).
- Large working-age population (demographic dividend) → potential for higher economic output, tax revenue and growth if education and skills are provided.

6. Common misconceptions and exam pitfalls
- Confusing birth rate with fertility rate (birth rate is annual; fertility rate is lifetime average).
- Assuming replacement level fertility is exactly 2 instead of 2.1.
- Thinking high birth rate is always beneficial (ignores pressure on resources and need for jobs).
- Believing India’s population will keep growing forever (fertility is already below replacement).
- Mixing up demographic dividend with mere large population (it specifically requires productive working-age people).
- Forgetting that population pyramids are read left (males) and right (females) and that a wide base = young population, wide top = ageing population.
- Overlooking regional differences within India (Kerala ageing faster than Bihar).
