Chapter at a glance
- A habitat provides the right conditions for an organism to live and grow; it consists of biotic components (plants, animals, microorganisms) and abiotic components (air, water, soil, sunlight, temperature).
- A population is a group of the same type of organisms living together in a habitat at a given time.
- A community comprises different populations sharing the same habitat; their interactions form the biotic part of an ecosystem.
- An ecosystem is formed by the interactions between biotic and abiotic components in an area; it may be aquatic (pond, river) or terrestrial (forest, farm).
- Producers (autotrophs) make their own food by photosynthesis; consumers (heterotrophs) are herbivores, carnivores or omnivores; decomposers (saprotrophs) break down dead matter and recycle nutrients.
- Feeding relationships are shown as food chains (“who eats whom”) and food webs (interlinked chains); organisms occupy specific trophic levels.
- Interactions among organisms include mutualism (both benefit), commensalism (one benefits, other unaffected) and parasitism (one benefits, other harmed); competition also regulates populations.
- Human activities such as deforestation, pollution and monoculture disrupt ecosystem balance; protected areas and sustainable practices help maintain harmony.
Definitions and laws
- Habitat: “a place where an organism lives.”
- Biotic components: living beings (plants, animals, microorganisms).
- Abiotic components: non-living things (air, water, soil, sunlight, temperature).
- Population: “a group of the same type of organisms in a habitat at a given time.”
- Community: “different populations sharing the same habitat.” The biotic components together form the community.
- Ecosystem: formed when “biotic components … and the abiotic components … in a habitat interact with each other.”
- Producers / Autotrophs: organisms that “make their own food by the process of photosynthesis.”
- Consumers / Heterotrophs: organisms that “cannot produce their own food and depend on other organisms for their food.”
- Herbivores: “eat only plants.”
- Carnivores: “eat only animals.”
- Omnivores: “eat both plants and animals.”
- Decomposers / Saprotrophs: microorganisms that “break down complex substances in dead plants and animals into simpler ones” (process called decomposition).
- Food chain: “a simple sequence showing ‘who eats whom’ in an ecosystem.”
- Food web: interlinked food chains forming “a network.”
- Trophic level: “specific position” an organism occupies in a food chain (producers at first level, herbivores at second, etc.).
- Mutualism: both organisms benefit.
- Commensalism: one organism benefits while the other is not affected.
- Parasitism: one organism benefits while the other is harmed.

Common misconceptions and exam pitfalls
- Confusing “population” (same species) with “community” (different species).
- Assuming only natural areas are ecosystems; farms and fish ponds are also ecosystems.
- Thinking decomposers are unnecessary; without them nutrients are not recycled.
- Believing food chains are isolated; most organisms belong to food webs.
- Reversing trophic-level order or forgetting that producers always occupy the first level.
- Overlooking indirect effects (e.g., fish → fewer dragonflies → more pollinators).
- Stating that only humans disturb ecosystems; natural changes can also alter balance.
- Writing “food web” when a linear food chain is required, or vice versa.
