Case 1

A student observed a transverse section of a young stem under a microscope. The section showed a sclerenchymatous hypodermis, numerous vascular bundles scattered in the ground tissue, each surrounded by a sclerenchymatous bundle sheath, absence of phloem parenchyma and presence of water-containing cavities inside vascular bundles.

(i) Identify the type of stem observed.
(ii) Name the type of vascular bundles present.
(iii) Why is phloem parenchyma absent in this stem?
(iv) State one function of the bundle sheath.

Case 2

In a dorsiventral leaf, stomata are more on the abaxial surface while the adaxial surface may even lack stomata. The mesophyll is differentiated into palisade and spongy parenchyma. Vascular bundles are surrounded by bundle sheath cells.

(i) What type of leaf is described?
(ii) Name the photosynthetic tissue and its two components.
(iii) Why are stomata more on the lower surface?
