1. Chapter at a glance
- R.H. Whittaker (1969) proposed the Five Kingdom Classification: Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae and Animalia, based on cell structure, body organisation, mode of nutrition, reproduction and phylogenetic relationships.
- Kingdom Monera comprises all prokaryotic bacteria (cocci, bacilli, vibrio, spirilla) showing extensive metabolic diversity; includes Archaebacteria (halophiles, thermoacidophiles, methanogens) and Eubacteria (cyanobacteria, chemosynthetic and heterotrophic bacteria).
- Kingdom Protista includes all unicellular eukaryotes: Chrysophytes (diatoms, golden algae), Dinoflagellates, Euglenoids, Slime moulds and Protozoans (amoeboid, flagellated, ciliated, sporozoans).
- Kingdom Fungi consists of heterotrophic eukaryotes with chitinous cell walls; mycelium of hyphae; classified into Phycomycetes, Ascomycetes, Basidiomycetes and Deuteromycetes on the basis of mycelium, spore formation and fruiting bodies.
- Kingdom Plantae comprises multicellular eukaryotic chlorophyll-containing organisms showing alternation of generations.
- Kingdom Animalia comprises multicellular heterotrophic eukaryotes lacking cell walls and showing holozoic nutrition.
- Viruses are non-cellular nucleoprotein entities with either RNA or DNA (never both); viroids are infectious free RNA; prions are abnormally folded proteins; lichens are mutualistic associations of phycobiont (alga) and mycobiont (fungus).

4. Common misconceptions and exam pitfalls
- Assuming two-kingdom (Plantae–Animalia) system is still valid; NCERT stresses its inadequacy due to failure to separate prokaryotes/eukaryotes and autotrophs/heterotrophs.
- Placing fungi with plants because both possess cell walls; text explicitly separates them on the basis of chitin vs cellulose.
- Considering all bacteria pathogenic; majority are decomposers or beneficial (curd, antibiotics, N₂-fixation).
- Treating viruses as living organisms; NCERT states they are inert crystalline outside host cells and therefore not truly living.
- Confusing diatomaceous earth with living diatoms; it is accumulated indestructible silica shells.
- Mixing up dikaryophase (n+n) of Ascomycetes/Basidiomycetes with diploid (2n) stage.
