1. Chapter at a glance
- Reproduction is not essential to maintain the life of an individual organism but creates new individuals that look like the parents through DNA copying.
- DNA copying is accompanied by creation of additional cellular apparatus; the process is not absolutely accurate and produces variations.
- Asexual reproduction creates new generations from a single individual using modes such as fission, fragmentation, regeneration, budding, vegetative propagation and spore formation.
- Sexual reproduction involves two individuals, combines DNA from two sources, and uses meiosis to restore chromosome number in the zygote.
- In flowering plants, pollen is transferred from stamen to stigma (pollination), followed by fertilisation in the ovule, seed and fruit formation.
- In humans, sexual maturation (puberty) produces germ-cells; male system produces sperms in testes and female system produces eggs in ovaries with fertilisation in the fallopian tube.
- If the egg is not fertilised, the thickened uterine lining breaks down and is shed as menstrual flow roughly every month.
- Contraceptive methods (mechanical barriers, hormonal pills, copper-T, surgical blocks) prevent pregnancy; surgical methods can also be misused for sex-selective abortion.

4. Common misconceptions and exam pitfalls
- Confusing regeneration with reproduction (text explicitly states regeneration is not the same as reproduction because organisms do not normally depend on being cut up).
- Assuming DNA copies are always identical (variations occur because biochemical copying is not absolutely reliable).
- Thinking vegetative propagation produces genetically different plants (text states all plants are genetically similar enough to the parent).
- Mixing up self-pollination and cross-pollination or pollination and fertilisation.
- Stating that testes are inside the abdominal cavity (they lie in the scrotum for lower temperature).
- Forgetting that copper-T or loop does not protect against STDs (only condoms do).
- Writing that menstruation occurs only if fertilisation fails (text links it to monthly preparation of uterine lining).
