1. Chapter at a glance
- An ecosystem consists of biotic components (living organisms) and abiotic components (physical factors like temperature, rainfall, wind, soil and minerals) that interact and maintain balance in nature.
- Organisms are grouped as producers (green plants and certain bacteria), consumers (herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, parasites) and decomposers (bacteria and fungi) according to how they obtain food.
- Food chains show a series of organisms feeding on one another; each step forms a trophic level (producers at first, followed by primary, secondary and tertiary consumers).
- Energy flow in an ecosystem is unidirectional; green plants capture about 1% of sunlight and only about 10% of food energy is transferred to the next trophic level on average.
- Food webs are branched networks of multiple food chains; most food chains have only three or four trophic levels due to progressive energy loss.
- Non-degradable chemicals accumulate progressively at each trophic level, leading to biological magnification, with maximum concentration in human beings at the top.
- Ozone (O₃) at higher atmospheric levels shields Earth from UV radiation; its depletion is linked to CFCs used in refrigerants and fire extinguishers.
- Wastes are classified as biodegradable (broken down by biological processes) or non-biodegradable (persist in the environment); improper disposal causes environmental problems.

4. Common misconceptions and exam pitfalls
- Assuming energy can flow back to previous trophic levels or to the Sun (text states flow is unidirectional and energy is lost at each step).
- Believing all food chains have many trophic levels or that energy transfer is 100% (text specifies only ~10% transfer and limits chains to 3–4 steps).
- Confusing biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes or thinking all wastes are broken down by microbes (text emphasises physical processes only for non-biodegradable items).
- Overlooking that biological magnification reaches maximum in humans at the top trophic level.
- Stating ozone is “good” everywhere (text clarifies it is a poison at ground level but protective at higher levels).
