One thing to understand before anything else
You are not choosing a career. You are choosing five or six subjects to study for two years.
That distinction matters, because most of the anxiety around this decision comes from treating it as irreversible. It is not. A Commerce student can become a lawyer, a civil servant, an economist, an architect or an entrepreneur. A Humanities student can become a journalist, a psychologist, a designer, a diplomat or a teacher. A Science student can — and often does — end up in business or public policy. Under NEP 2020, CBSE has deliberately loosened the old rigid stream boundaries, and universities increasingly admit through CUET rather than through stream labels.
There is one genuine constraint, and it is worth being blunt about it: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics or Biology in Grades 11 and 12 are gatekeepers. Engineering, medicine, pure science research, architecture and most defence-technical entries require them. Nothing else on this page is a one-way door. That one is.
The practical rule: if you are genuinely undecided and you can handle the workload, Science with Mathematics keeps the widest set of doors open. If you are decided, or if Science would mean two years of grinding through subjects you dislike, choosing it "to be safe" is the more expensive mistake — not the safer one.
It is also worth knowing which way the ground is moving. The fastest-growing fields — artificial intelligence, sustainability, design, data-driven policy, product and behavioural work — are interdisciplinary. They reward people who went deep in one discipline and can talk to the others, and they now recruit from all three streams. A decade ago the safe advice was to pick the stream with the most jobs attached. Today the better advice is to pick the one you will go deep in.
