Visit to Rabbit Farm

The GFIS Kindergarteners went on a delightful field trip to a nearby rabbit farm on February 13.It proved to be a 'once in a lifetime' experience for all the little ones as they ventured to pet these furry little animals, picked them up ,held them close, communicated with them in their own way and watched and observed them closely as the rabbits ran about, feeding themselves on whatever was being offered to them.

What better place to awaken their senses than a rabbit farm? Stroking the rabbits taught the children about what soft texture was all about.Their fine motor skills were put to test as they patiently held blades of grass/straw and carrots while the rabbits nibbled at them.As the children chatted away with each other and filled the silence happily with their chatter, there was a lot of give and take between friends-discussions and debates over what the rabbit preferred to eat-Carrots or grass; which babies were better looking-human or rabbit babies??

And what a great place to learn lots of new words – it isn’t every day that you would need to use words such as 'hutch'or realise that the baby of both a rabbit and a cat is called 'kitten'. Asking children questions such as, “Do you think the rabbit liked being stroked?” and “Do you think the rabbit is hungry?” helped children consider their feelings. One could see the beginnings of empathy in these little ones, who could not stop talking about their visit long after they had come back to school.
